Cosmetic Dentist in Santa Monica
Merging the Most Advanced Technology with the Eye of an Artist for Life Changing Results
You may wonder…Who is the best cosmetic dentist?…or…How do I know if my cosmetic dentist is the best? Well, there are two primary categories that you should consider if you are looking for the best.
The first category is technology. Does the doctor stay abreast of the latest innovations and invest both the time and the money to take advantage of the technological strides taking place? Don't forget that technology is not just limited to equipment, it is also the techniques and products used by the dentist. Every step in a dental procedure and the quality of the materials used is of the utmost importance for the best long-term results.
The second category is the skill of the doctor and this is where many patients don't dig deep enough before undergoing a procedure. When it comes to cosmetic dentistry your dentist must have the eye of an artist. You will only look as good as your dentist's skills allow. If the dentist lacks talent you will probably be disappointed in the work!
Does the Dentist have the skills and talent to provide
the best cosmetic dentistry?
The best way to know if your dentist is talented is to look at before and after images of his or her patients.
Step 1: Ask for before and after photos. But wait before you start reviewing the photos…don't get tricked! Many dentists will show you before and after images that are not their patients and not work done by their hand in their office. Make sure that you ask for only images of patients where the doctor actually did the work they are showing.
Step 2: Ask if all of the photos were taken with the same camera, the same lens and also in the same setting. Sometimes different cameras, lenses or settings are used to amplify the effect of one of the photos. This type of photography does not allow you to really see the work honestly. Also confirm that the images have not been altered, touched-up, or manipulated in any way.
Tip: You may also want to ask if the patient's were compensated for releasing their photos. Patient's who are truly proud of the work they had done and confident in their dentist will release their photos without any compensation or price break.
Step 3: Review the before and after images and make sure that there is variety in the teeth from patient to patient. A talented dentist will design a totally custom look for each patient based upon the patient's aesthetic goals and anatomy. Everyone is different so their teeth should be too! If the teeth from patient to patient all look suspiciously similar, chances are the dentist does not have the artistic eye or technology to design a look specific to you. When all of the patients have over sized, bulky, squared off teeth chances are that this is what you will also get. Sometimes these differences are subtle so look closely.
Tip: Look at the shape of the teeth from one patient to the next. For example, some people will look best with soft rounded corners but some will prefer a more square shape. You should see a range of these shapes in the before and after images so that you know the dentist has the skills to give you whatever style and shape you desire.
Step 4: Look for natural looking teeth in every photo. Too often dentists fail to capture the anatomy of a real tooth when they do veneers or crowns. Consequently the teeth end up looking bulky and fake. Natural teeth have surface texture and translucencies. Look for slight surface ridges and undulations on the face of the tooth to know if the dentist has the skills to capture a believable look. Also look for slight translucencies especially towards the lower edges of the crowns or veneers. If the dentist has talent, the finished work will look beautiful but also natural. Without some surface texture and translucency the work will never look real.
Tip: Look closely because proper surface texture that mimics the anatomy of a real tooth is subtle but it makes all the difference. Likewise teeth have transparencies so your veneers and crowns should as well. Anything less just looks fake.
Step 5: Look for teeth that are not all the exact same length. Bi-cuspid teeth are normally longer and more pointed at the bottom that your very front teeth. Creating crowns and veneers that do not at least subtly respect the natural anatomical lengths of your teeth will not fool anyone.
Tip: Some patients will request to have the length or the point on their bi-cuspid removed or softened. This should be the patients' choice! So make sure that you see a more anatomically correct option (longer and more pointed) and the softer and shorter option in the before and after images. If you see both you will know that dentist can deliver whichever shape makes you feel the most confident.

Replacing Bad Veneers
The place where Dr. Muslin really stands out from the crowd of cosmetic dentist is with his artistic skills. His ability to hone in on every opportunity, no matter how small, to take his patients look to the next level, is unmatched. Every one of his patients receives a custom design that is developed after extensive consideration of their aesthetic goals, lifestyle, and facial shapes. Every patient spends a great deal of time one on one with him while he studies their face and mouth during speech, at rest, and when smiling. Statistically the average person is smiling only 5% of the time so it is critical to understand how the patient looks and feels when at rest and when speaking.
Tip: We have seen many patients who had work done by other dentists and after which they could not speak properly. They struggled with normal "s" sounds and "th" sounds. It was almost as if they were slurring their words. This can occur when the patient's speech patterns are not studied long enough or at all.
By merging the most sophisticated technology and the skills of an artist Dr. Muslin delivers the most natural life changing results every time. Each patient is intimately involved in the decisions and results of their case. Before permanently seating any of the work, the patient has the chance to try everything in and take as much time as they need to evaluate their new look. Patients are always encouraged to walk outside of the office and take a few minutes to look at themselves in daylight. It is important for the patient to feel great about how they look in artificial light, daylight, while smiling, when talking and when at rest. Only after the patient is totally comfortable and confident does Dr. Muslin permanently bonded the work into place.
Tip: We see patients on a regular basis who have come to us after having veneer or crowns does elsewhere. These patients told us that they immediately felt the work was not right for them when they tried it in. However, they were convinced to more forward with the permanent bonding because they were told that they were just "not use to the look". Sure, there is an adjustment period when you dramatically change the look of your teeth but before making the change permanent you should feel confident and excited!
Dr. Muslin's commitment to bringing his patients the best heath care possible is unwavering but it is his passion for transforming their lives through the art of cosmetic dentistry is inspiring.
